About

CHER is an energy from waste facility that will recover energy by processing around 230,000 tonnes of West Sussex’s non-recyclable waste every year. It will generate up to 23MW of low carbon electricity and steam, enough energy to power the equivalent of approximately 47,000 homes. Residues from the combustion process will be used to produce aggregates that can be used in the production of concrete products or construction.

Regulated by the Environment Agency, the facility will contribute to the UK’s drive to reduce CO2 emissions from electricity generation. It is a clean and safe way of treating waste that cannot be recycled, and will divert waste from going to landfill or from being exported.

CHER is being developed by Qair, an independent renewable energy producer. Founded more than 30 years ago, the company is experienced in developing, building and operating wind, solar, hydroelectric and green hydrogen projects around the world. Working in 20 countries across Europe, Latin America and Africa. Qair is an international leader in responsible energy generation. You can find out more about Qair on their website.

The CHER site is on the Wealden Works industrial site to the north of Horsham in West Sussex. Construction is due to start in Summer 2025 and will take approximately three years. It is anticipated that more than 300 jobs will be created during the construction phase, with 40 permanent roles once CHER is operational. Opportunities will also be available for a wide range of local suppliers. We will provide more information on these opportunities as they become available.
